FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous experience?

None!

If you have some great. The sessions will be based around you and where you are with your cycling.

Do I need a bike / cycle?

Yes.

I have a few available but as I cycle everywhere I find it hard to transport hire cycles with me.

As an adult based in Greater Manchester you can hire a bike for free.

You can contact your local bike shop for advice on buying a new or second hand bike.

I’ve got an e-Bike, can I use that?

If it is a pedal assist cycle I am happy for that to be used for on road training.

I cannot work with any cycle where the motor works when the pedals aren’t turning.

How do I know if my bike / cycle is okay?

You can quickly check this at home. Performing an ‘M-Check’ or ‘ABCD Check’ can help you identify any problems.

If you find something wrong or you’re not sure, get it checked at your local bike shop.

What sort of bike / cycle do I need?

If you’re after a two-wheeler then I’d recommend popping into your local bike shop to speak to them. It really depends on what sort of riding you will mostly be doing but to begin with any bike that fits you.

If you need an adaptive cycle, Simply Cycling or Cycling UK can support with trials and advice.

What size bike do I need?

When you are learning, slightly small is better than slightly large. This means you can touch the floor with both feet and so if you lose balance you can put your feet down.

As you become more confident you will notice you want to just be able to touch the floor with your toes when on the saddle. The set up of bike will depend what sort of bike it is and what sort of riding you are wanting to do.

Your local Bike Shop can help with this!

Do I need to wear a helmet?

No. It’s not a requirement in UK Law to wear a helmet. You can choose whether or not to wear a helmet.

For children taking part in on road training I will need written permission from a guardian to confirm they are happy for the rider to not wear a helmet.

I choose to wear a helmet during all sessions.

Do I need to wear knee or elbow pads?

No. They often just get in the way!

Do I need to bring anything else?

Not really, just wear clothes suitable for the weather and gloves if cold. Maybe some water and a snack.

Does an adult need to stay with a child learning to ride?

Yes. For the Learn to Ride sessions I would ask that a responsible adult is present throughout the session.

Does an adult need to be present with children for on road sessions?

No. But adults are welcome to join and learn as well!

I have a carer, can they join for the session?

Of course. A carer for someone with a disability or additional need can join the session free of charge but would count towards the total numbers for On-Road sessions.

How long is a session?

Learn to ride sessions are scheduled for one hour. This is because people often get tired and I would rather people enjoy the sessions and want to practice more than get to a point of frustration.

Confidence building and Family sessions are bespoke and so session length tailored to your needs.

Bikeability Level 1, 2 and 3 session lengths are based on numbers. I would usually recommend one hour for Level 1 and two to three hours for Level 2/3.

How long will it take me to learn?

I don’t know!

Some people are pedalling at the end of the first session. Some people take longer. This can be for lots of reasons.

I will stretch people, but never push too hard. I want people to enjoy the sessions and enjoy cycling for the rest of their lives. Spending the time learning the fundamentals well will set you up for the rest of your cycling journey.

When’s your next availability?

I offer sessions during the week, weekends, evenings and school holidays.

Because I don’t base myself at a specific location and travel to a location suitable for both of us I can’t offer a direct booking form on the website, sorry!

Send me a message to check.

Where do you do sessions?

All over Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas.

I do a lot of Learn To Ride sessions at Wythenshawe Cycling Hub and Chorlton Park as they have great spaces but have done lessons in lots of different parks. If you have a space nearby that is suitable I am happy to try to make that work for you.

Road training is best done on the roads you are going to cycle, so we would aim to do the session covering this area.

What if it rains?

I work in the North West of England, if I didn’t work in the rain I would barely work at all!

Sessions will be on as scheduled except in cases of extreme weather where it becomes unsafe to cycle.

What if our session is cancelled?

If I cancel a session, we can arrange another date for a session or I can return your deposit.

If you cancel the session we can rebook for another date.

Do you have any SEND experience?

Yes. I work in schools and with Simply Cycling.

I have also completed the Bikeability Trust’s SEND interactive CPD module.

You can contact me to discuss any particular needs before booking a session.

When you sign up for a session you can share anything that would help me coach you better.

What ages do you work with?

All ages!

Below 4 years old you may just want to get them on a balance bike to build their skills. But I’m happy to help everyone to learn or build confidence cycling from those in Nursery to those who’ve retired!

I want to arrange something for my school or club?

I’ve worked privately with schools and groups / clubs to deliver bespoke cycle training sessions. Just contact me with your needs and we can arrange something.

Have you attended any Safeguarding courses?

I have also attended the Safeguarding Lead in Sport Course by NSPCC in August 2025.

I can share this with you at your request.

I can share the certificate at your request

How do I complain?

You can see my complaints procedure here.

You can complain formally or informally to me, face to face or by contacting me.

If you are not satisfied with my response or don’t feel able to complain directly to me you can contact the Bikeability Trust here.

How do I pay?

I ask for a £10 deposit to book the session, then you can pay the balance via bank transfer or cash on the day after the session.
